Placating the Feds
Posted on 10/08/2009 12:53 pm by adminFrom www.slate.com:
The FTC states that it will consider a number of factors including (1) whether the speaker was compensated; (2) whether the product was provided for free; (3) the terms of any agreement; (4) the length of any relationship; (5) previous receipt of products or likelihood of future receipt from the same or similar advertisers; and (6) the value of any items received. The revised Guides further state that it may not matter that the advertiser does not control whether the speaker reviews the product positively.
So for the FTC’s benefit, here is my financial disclosure:
I have referenced several for profit websites including (but not limited to) Slate and the Atlantic. These referrals were not solicited. I have also given positive reviews/feedback of products such as gladware. Again not solicited.
(1) I have not been compensated.
(2) I have not received any products.
(3) There is no agreement other than any terms of use agreements displayed on the referenced websites.
(4) There is no formal relationship. I have been reading Slate since 2007, all other references since 2009.
(5) There have been no previous receipts of goods or services and I doubt any will be given in the future. If any are, I will obviously disclose that.
(6) No items = no value.
